Hatha yoga is the combination of pranayama (breathing exercises) and asana (poses) that most people in the West associate with the word “yoga.” Styles of Hatha yoga come in many variations, though all contain the same basic poses as a foundation. Differences arise from variations on breath, sequence, motion, alignment and overall form.
Here at Devi Yoga, we offer many different types of Hatha yoga with the overall emphasis of integrating a serene mind, a harmonious spirit and a powerful, healthy body.
Classes are typically 75 to 90 minutes, with the exception of the 60-minute classes that start at noon on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. For an up-to-date schedule, go to “online schedule.” For more details on a specific class, click on the class name.
Iyengar
Iyengar yoga focuses on symmetry and alignment, and uses props as aids so that all levels may get into and experience the poses with ease. Props such as blocks, chairs, blankets and straps allow the body to find the correct positions without excessive strain. Based on poses and breathing exercises from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, Iyengar yoga emphasizes precise body alignment to enhance the therapeutic effects of yoga. This style focuses on refined technique, sequence of poses and steady timing.
Vinyasa
Vinyasa yoga flows smoothly between poses, creating a dynamic connection between traditional static poses. The term “vinyasa” means “breath-synchronized movement.” Breaths dictate the length of time a pose is held, and shifting from one pose to the next is done on an inhalation or exhalation. The flowing movements warm the body, improving circulation and stimulating sweating to expel toxins. Students will also develop stamina and flexibility from practicing vinyasa.
Restorative Yoga
This calming, therapeutic class alternately stimulates and relaxes the body using the support of props such as blankets and blocks to allow students to practice without strain. Conscious relaxation in long-held passive poses goes beyond muscle stretching and targets the muscle lining and connective tissue. Restorative yoga benefits the body's chemical balance and alleviates stress-related conditions such as anxiety, migraine headaches and insomnia. This meditative practice allows students to disengage the mind and let go.
Yin and Vinyasa
This class takes two different approaches to movement to create a balanced practice similar to the dualities in nature that Taoists call yin and yang. In the yang portion of the class, students practice soft vinyasa – a dynamic style of yoga that flows from one pose to the next – to bring air and energy into the lungs, muscles and skin. The yin portion focuses on meditation and passive poses held for longer periods of time to target the deeper layers of muscle and tissue. Just as yin and yang create balance and order in nature, practicing these styles side by side brings balance to our lives as well.
Intro to Yoga / Yoga Fundamentals For Beginners
These classes are designed to establish a solid foundation for beginners. Content of the classes will differ each week to help students learn breathing exercises (pranayama), basic standing and seated poses (asana), principles of alignment, meditation and relaxation. Instructors provide individual attention and hands-on adjustments to give students the necessary knowledge and skill to progress to more challenging classes. People of every fitness level – from the tri-athlete to the sedentary individual – can participate. Students should inform instructors before class of any specific limitations or injuries.
In order to provide students with a variety of instructional styles, poses and stretches, Thursday night's class is taught on alternating weeks by Louis Jackson and Mercedes Delaney. Mercedes also teaches the Monday night class, and Bonnie Linde teaches on Saturday.
Anusara Inspired Yoga
Anusara yoga is a style that combines Tantric philosophy with the “Universal Principles of Alignment.” Tantric philosophy believes that everything is inherently good, and students are encouraged to seek the good in all things, especially in themselves and in others. The Universal Principles of Alignment are based on three central ideas – attitude, alignment and action – which integrate the heart, mind and body into a practice that attempts to align with the Divine. Anusara yoga flows through heart-oriented poses that are expressed from the inside out. This constantly developing style accepts all types of people into its yoga community.
Yogalates
Yogalates combines yoga with pilates for a more complete practice. Yoga develops overall health and well-being, integrating the mind, body and spirit into a therapeutic exercise. Pilates focuses on core stabilization, which allows the rest of the body to move freely and develops strong abdominal muscles and good posture. Originally a method of rehabilitation for hospital patients, pilates is gentle yet effective. The combination of yoga and pilates builds strength without bulk and helps students develop a lean, balanced body that is also flexible.
